Medi-spas & dermatologists use ultraviolet photographs to show patients their ‘future’ skin. While there is no guarantee that this ‘unseen‘ damage will ever appear, the images are still used as tools to sell anti-aging treatments. Using this UV process, I set up my camera in various public spaces and photographed everyone who was willing. The resulting images are not intended to ‘reveal’ the subject’s skin damage, but to question the revelatory expectation of the photographic portrait. And in a culture dominated by retouched images, Instagram & Snap filters, and increasing access to augemented reality software, to ask what is the role of ‘straight’ portrait photgraphy.
